olkata, the City of Joy, embraces and encompasses people and communities from all over India regardless of language, culture, customs and traditions. The population of Marwari community is wide spread in the state of West Bengal and has largely inhabited the city of Kolkata for generations.

Our people, especially the younger generation, lured by western influence, celebrate certain functions which do not suit the Indian culture and calendar. It is particularly predominant during the year end, when some even end up indulging in unethical activities. In this context, in order to maintain the fabric of Indian tradition, heritage and culture, SALT LAKE LOK SANSKRITI was set up by a group oi like minded persons, twelve years ago.

Salt Lake Lok Sanskriti, altruism as its motive, has been organizing cultural, social and heritage based events, such as Rajasthani Mela by the name of 'AAPNO GAON' (Aamaader Gram), Holi, Gangaur, Teej Utsav etc.

signature and main event is Rajasthani Mela ('Aapno Gaon'). It includes Rajasthani folk songs and dances, cultural and social activities, focusing on rich heritage, and is spread over the last eight days of the year. We have been successfully celebrating it for the last 12 years in Salt Lake City, Kolkata, in close association, and, -under the guidance of Department of Tourism, Art & Culture, Govt, of Rajasthan, Haryana & West Bengal. It has rural ambience and rustic atmosphere and the mela arena resembles a traditional Rajasthani village.

The whole mela ground reverberates and resounds with various cultural programmes in the evening, presented by artists of international fame, deputed by the Government of Rajasthan / Haryana. Chefs from Rajasthan prepare various Rajasthani cuisines, which are served by the people dressed in Rajasthani attire, with traditional customary courtesy and hospitality, called 'Manuhar'.

'Aapno Gaon' being a unique mela and only one of its kind, fashions itself as a model village of Rajasthan / Haryana, in an area of 2,50,000 sq.ft. at Nicco Park (Big Lawn), Salt Lake City. This electrifying, delightful, rich and lively mela is organized with the idea of roping in more and more people who can gladly come together with their entire family members and celebrate the festive year end in an ideal atmosphere of ethnic flavor. It provides an apt opportunity of garnering positive association along with entertainment.

Culture and social events promote an awareness and participation of youth in our culture and tradition as well. The wonderful and enjoyable events scheduled for eight days is swarmed everyday by thousands of visitors (around 1.5 lac persons over the entire period), including almost the whole of Marwari Community, owners and top executives of big corporate houses, eminent dignitaries, bureaucrats and people from all cross section of the society.

Salt Lake Lok Sanskriti is organizing its annual signature event Rajasthani Mela 'Apno Gaon 2014' this year too at Nicco Park (Big Lawn). The mela is being held from 24th December '14 till 31st December '14, and will start from 6:00 p.m. everyday.
