Apur Panchali - Kaushik Ganguly's next is ready for a grand release!
ontrary to popular opinion, Kaushik Ganguly's next - "Apur Panchali" is not a takeoff on Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali, but is largely based on the life of the Apu on reel, the child artiste from that film - Subir Banerjee.
The actor was a famous child artiste post the release of Pather Panchali, but no one knew that his real life would resemble his reel life so much. Unfortunately that remained his claim to fame as he was relatively unknown after that. In the film, he is shown to receive an award at an international film festival and he looks back at life after that.
In an interaction with the press at a press conference at the Oberoi Grand, Kaushik Ganguly said, "I had thought of making a subject on this subject after Sirsha Ray was discussing the subject with me one day. When I discussed this with the producers, they told me to go ahead with it. I did some research work and completed the film. The child character of Apu is an iconic character of Ray's film and is still fondly remembered by most people till now. Like most child actors or actresses even from Hollywood who slipped in to oblivion after a few films which were their claim to fame, the case of Subir Banerjee was no less different. The film is inspired by his life, it is not a biopic."
Talking about the casting, the director revealed - "When I thought of the casting, Parambrata resembled the character of the grown up Apu though he was much taller than Subir Banerjee. Real film lovers will love the film, I think."
Composer Indradeep Dasgupta had the toughest part arguably, as Ravi Shankar had composed the music for Pather Panchali; and this film, already drawing comparisons in public eye, the music of both films will forever be a talking point for all Bengalis.
"This film will be most special to me for not only is it inspired from the life of the real 'Apu' but also for the fact, that this is probably the last time I would have acted in a film on the 35 mm reel", said Parambrata..
The film also stars Parno Mitra, Ritwick Chakrabarty, Gaurav Chakrabarty and Ardhendu Banerjee and has been produced by Shree Venkatesh Films.
The film is slated for release on 25th April, 2014 and here's wishing the entire team - all the very best!
