'10th July' - a new Bengali film offers an insight into the life of a gay couple & a lesbian couple
he music launch of the film "10th July" took place recently at a Banquet Hall in the City. Unfortunately among the long list of cast memberslike Chiranjeet, Abhrajit, Kanchana Maitra, Rupa Bhattacharya and Rituparna Sengupta; only Abhrajit was present along with the director and Usha Uthup.
However Rituparna Sengupta did make a grand entry later on in the evening! Our Little Birdie hears that she plays a special role, a cameo, in the film of that of a Governess.
Ratul Ganguly has directed the film which has been produced by T.S.K Films. The film also stars Dulal Lahiri, Debasree Roy and others. The music is by Debjit Roy while the lyrics are by Sumit Sammadar, Anindya Bose and Basudev Ghosh. Usha Uthup, Anwesha, Debasmita, Debasree Roy, Babul Supriyo, Sourav Das, Debjani Sarkar, Shabnam and Subhasish have sung for the film.
Suddenly homosexuality seems to be a very open and interesting subject for the filmmakers, perhaps because of the Supreme Court’s decision and also because it is no longer under wraps. However 10th July - the new Bengali film, also a delayed project as it had been shot at at least a couple of years ago; is different.
Not only it is about homosexuality, but also it deals with two particular pairs, a gay pair and a lesbian pair. The gay pair is played by Chiranjeet and newcomer Abhrajit and the lesbian pair is played by Kanchana Maitra and Rupa Bhattacharya.
Incidentally one of the gay characters is straight at first, but becomes gay later on due to circumstances!
